Crime-Prevention Tips
This article by Bob McCarthy appeared in “The Grower,” February 2000.
Don’t be an easy mark for thieves or vandals. Sgt. Robert Matthews of the Tulare County, California, Sheriff’s Department suggests taking these steps to deter burglaries and improve the chances of recovering stolen property:
- Mark all machinery, tools, and chemical containers with an owner-applied number, or OAN. Your local law-enforcement agency will issue the I.D. number.
- Fence and illuminate sheds, garages, and storage areas. Be sure gates and fences are in good repair.
- Lock up equipment and chemicals at the end of each day.
- Don’t leave keys in tractors sitting out overnight. Anchor the vehicle by dropping the implement into the ground.
- Don’t tolerate stealing from employees. Ignoring it will only worsen the problem.
- Report trespassers or any suspected theft to authorities immediately.
- Assist in the prosecution of suspects who get caught.
