Texas Master Gardener Program

The Texas Master Gardener program is an educational activity offered by the Texas AgriLIFE Extension of Texas A&M University System. It is designed to increase the availability of horticultural information and extend horticultural projects throughout the community. It provides invaluable training and educational opportunities.

The objectives of the Texas Master Gardener program are to expand the capacity of Texas AgriLIFE Extension and to distribute horticultural information to individuals and groups in the community. It also strives to develop and enhance community programs related to horticulture. Depending on the community needs, these may be environmental improvement activities, horticultural therapy projects or community and school garden programs.

To become a Master Gardener you must have a willingness to learn and a desire to help others.  An application must be submitted and accepted. The applicant must attend a minimum of 70 hours of instruction, pass an examination and volunteer 50 hours of service within a year to earn the title of Master Gardener. In order to retain the title, a Master Gardener must complete 12 hours of re-certification training and 12 hours of volunteer service every 2 years.

As an Anderson County Master Gardener you will agree to do work related to horticulture for your local Extension office.  This work may consist of a variety of jobs. Master Gardener Volunteers work with the staff in the Extension office and respond to phone calls. Some volunteer work may also include doing research, writing or art work, 4-H and school garden projects, and working with parks and recreation.

The Anderson County Master Gardener Association is registered with the State of Texas as a 501c3 Nonprofit Organization.
